Poker Strategies

Playing poker requires a great of patience and understanding. The best way to win a poker game is by honing your observation skills, and playing your opponent more than your cards. There are many strategies that can be employed to improve your poker game. Once you're familiar with the rules of the kind of poker you're playing,

Play in position

As previously mentioned, the most important thing when playing poker is to observe your opponent. Watching their mannerisms and the way they bet is vital to winning a poker hand. When betting, it is important to watch how other players bet, so that you are better informed when deciding whether to check, raise or fold. If you bet out of turn, you do so before seeing what other players are doing, and therefore complete your turn with less information than you would have if you had stayed in turn. Watch your opponents and wait. Do your best to sit down at a table where you are in the best position, so that you can see other players bet first and have a better position over them.

It's OK to slow the game down

Sometimes when playing poker (especially the online variety) the game picks up tremendous speed and momentum. This is especially common when a player raises as soon as the cards are dealt after being dealt a low value pair. Often (again especially in online poker) small pairs are overvalued, and players like to raise immediately when they see them, only to find another player re-raises them, and a third player goes all in, all on the same hand. What is the first player who received the low pocket pair to do? Chances are, they are grossly overvaluing the low pair that they have, and should strongly consider folding. In a situation like this, it is ok to take a step back and fold and let the other two battle it out. This will give you valuable information into the playing styles of both of your opponents, and you only lose the little amount that you initially invested when you raised the first time (which hopefully was not too substantial of an amount).

Making a deposit

When making a deposit online, there are a few different methods that you can use. The first is by credit card. You can use your Visa or Mastercard to make a deposit. One thing you may notice however is that when trying to make a deposit with your credit card, it gets declined. This happens because casinos are required to identify the fact that the deposit is being made for online gambling, and credit card companies are apprehensive to take the risk of approving an online gambling transaction. Because of this you may be forced to make the deposit using an alternative method. This brings us to the second method you can use for payment: paypal. When making a transaction using paypal, the credit card is billed as a transaction to paypal and not a gambling transaction and as a result, will go through with little trouble. Some poker and gambling websites also allow players to pay using western union.

If it's not good enough to raise with, consider folding

If it's not good enough to raise with, and you plan to check all the way through, just fold and save your money. The person who raises controls the game. If you aren't in a position where you can raise (even if you are bluffing) you need to watch the cards you play. If you check you are making a very clear statement to your opponent (especially in no limit games) that your cards are weak and give them an opening to take control by raising. Once they raise, they know you are going to be left reeling. When you get your cards, if you decide that you are going to stick with them make sure that you have the bankroll to raise if need be. If you are going to play a hand make sure that you can finance it, otherwise fold and wait for the next round!
